Tuesday Moderate Ride -- Panera -- 9:00 AM -- June 15, 2021

This week’s Tuesday Moderate Ride will visit the Garrison Archeological Site in Lake Forest. There is admittedly not much to see there today – just a bolder with a plaque on it. It is, however, so cool to know that there was a major archeological discovery in Lake Forest, not far from the roads that we regularly ride.

The Garrison Site was excavated in 1991-1992 when a new road was put in by developer Barry Carroll. It is located north of Westleigh Road near Wallace Road and the Carroll Meadow Nature Preserve,

The Garrison site yielded some of the oldest and best documented evidence of human occupation in Northeast Illinois. Archaeological evidence from the site shows that Paleo Indians were present in Lake Forest as long as 10,000 years ago, though most items found date to the Woodland Period. The site was named in honor of the late Morrow Garrison who had worked closely with Barry Carroll on various developments and with the archeologists on this dig.

Our total distance will be about 40 miles. My pace will be a moderate 13 – 15 mph. With enough interest and a willing leader there will be a second group traveling at a slightly faster pace. Lunch will be at Panera in Lake Bluff.

Tuesday’s weather forecast looks promising – a high temperature of 72 degrees, winds from the NNE at 10 to 20 mph, and almost no chance of rain.
