Tuesday Moderate Ride – June 21st – 9:00 AM – Panera

This week’s ride is a bit odd. We will celebrate Jean-Paul Sartre’s birthday with a No Exit Ride. If you slept through European Literature Class, Sartre is a French existentialist writer who wrote a play titled “No Exit” which was the subject of much earnest intellectual discussion on college campuses in the 60s.

The ride started as a joke. A long time ago (I was still riding a diamond frame bike) while talking with some other EBC members about places we might ride, I joked that we could celebrate Sartre’s birthday with a No Exit Ride exploring some of the dead-end streets along Sheridan Road. My feeble joke got a feeble laugh, and I thought that was the end of it, but some years later (after I’d switched to a recumbent) someone asked when I was going to do the No Exit Ride. I thought, why not and checked to be certain that Sartre hadn’t been born in the dead of winter. I led the ride on several occasions, when Sartre’s birthday fell on a Tuesday or the weekend but haven’t led it for many years. We were still doing cue sheets in Excel the last time I led the ride.

Sartre was a cyclist, preferring to get around Paris on a bicycle rather than walking, but there is no reason to believe that he would have approved of marking his birthday with a frivolous bike ride through extravagant bourgeoisie suburbs. Oh well.

Here is a link to the route I will be using: Ride with GPS | Bike Route Planner and Cycling Navigation App. It is not in the cue sheet library. Sartre’s birthday does not fall on a Tuesday again until 2033, In the unlikely event that I am still leading bike rides then, I suspect I might want to make some changes to the route.

The weather forecast calls for another scorcher on Tuesday – a sunny day with a high temperature of 98 degrees. The wind will be out of the WSW at 10 to 20 mph, and there is almost no chance of rain. Our route is relatively close to the Lake, so let’s hope that “Cooler by the Lake” is applicable this week.

Our lunch will be at Bluffington’s. All riders should wear a helmet and be vaccinated against Covid-19. Bring a mask in case they are required at the rest or lunch stops.
