Tuesday Moderate Ride – September 10th – 9:00 AM – Panera
This week we’ll be riding to Foley Pond, a hidden gem of a park – essentially a fishing hole – in Highland Park. Most of us would never stumble across it in our usual comings and goings. It’s hard enough to find when you know that it is there. No parking lot, very subtle signage, no playground equipment, and no paved surfaces.
We’ll ride to Lake Forest along Ridge, take Old Elm and a few other streets east and south to Highland Park, stopping to lunch at Once Upon a Bagel. In part this route is an excuse to visit this old EBC favorite and Stanley-approved restaurant, that I don’t think we have visited enough lately. After lunch we’ll pay a short visit to Foley Pond. Fishing and birding are the major activities here, but we won’t be doing either. Just looking and maybe taking a couple of pictures. Last year we found some delicious wild plums. And while he or she did not show up last year, I swear there is a turtle the size of serving platter in the pond.
Here is a link to the route I’ll use: HP-Foley Pond · Ride with GPS. Our total distance will be 30 miles. I will ride at a moderate (13 – 15 mph) pace. With enough interest there will be a second, slightly faster, group led by Will.
The warm weather is returning next week. The forecast is for abundant sunshine with a high temperature of 85 degrees. The wind will be from the SSW at 5 to 10 mph, and there is almost no chance of rain.
