Tuesday Moderate Ride - October 30 - 9:00 AM - Panera
Last year I learned about a Lake Forest mystery
and ghost story, which provided the theme for my Halloween Ride that year. It
was bitterly cold last year and only a handful of people rode, so I will
reprise the ride this year. We’ll visit the scene of the murder (or was it a
suicide), the site of reported ghost sightings, and a few other locations
including the grave of the victim/ghost. Given my extreme skepticism and the
daylight hour, no ghost sightings are expected. Consequently after lunch in
Lake Forest we’ll make a stop to see the ghosts, ghouls, and other monsters on
display at Ravinia Glen Place (just north of Lake Cook Road on the west side of
Green Bay Road).
Our total distance will be about 36 miles. My
pace will be a moderate 13 – 15 mph. With enough interest and a willing leader,
we may have a second group traveling at around 16 mph for portions of this
ride.
If you are curious about the mystery and ghost story
(dating from 1916) you can take a look at this three part Chicago Tribune story
about it: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/chi-ghost-story-north-shore-gallery-storygallery.html.
You can find the route that we will more or less
use at: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/26409290. Because of the weather we changed the morning
rest stop from Moraine Park to the Highland Park Train Station last year, and I
am planning to make that change to the route again this year. Last year, also
due to the weather, we lunched at Egg Harbor rather than Caputo’s. Lunch this
year will be at Einstein’s Bagels, Caputo’s, or Egg Harbor depending on the
weather, the size of the group, and the whim of the ride leader.
