Ride Commerating the 55th Anniversary of the Selma...
Author Last Post
The Montgomery Bicycle Club (Alabama) and the Major Taylor Cycling Club Chicago invites us to commemorate the 55th Anniversary of the Historic Selma to Montgomery Voting Rights March Come pedal the historic route on Saturday, February 22, 2020. Cyclists will follow the same 54-mile route that the foot soldiers took during their tension-packed march across the Pettus Bridge to the steps of the Alabama State Capitol, where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and a host of others, addressed a crowd of 25,000 people in support of voting rights.
The ride will have full SAG support along with snacks/refreshments at the following mile rest stops (mile 8, mile 22 and mile 42). Rider registration for cyclists ($150) includes breakfast, one-way bus transportation from Montgomery to Selma for the cyclist and  bicycle, SAG and mechanic support along the route, plus a post-ride meal in Montgomery. If you have non-cycling guests that would like to join you, there is a non-cycling tourist bus package ($70) that also includes breakfast, round-trip transportation from Montgomery to Selma, historic stops for sightseeing and photo opportunities along the way, bus transportation back to Montgomery, plus a post-ride meal.

This is a single day ride with 40 miles coursing through farmland and some hills along  US 80 which back in 1965 was a very lightly traveled 2 lane county road.  It has since been improved to a 4 lane highway. Stops include a visit to the National Park Service Interpretive Center, and Pettus Bridge as well as well-stocked bike rest stops along the way.
Optional visits are available to the Rosa Parks Museum, the Civil Heritage Trail, and Civil Rights Memorial Center at the Southern Poverty Law Center- so there is much to see and do.

Mary Beth and I have already registered and plan to drive down (765 miles/ 13 hrs) over 2 days.  Be advised that the EBC Mid Winter Dinner is also the same day as the ride.
