DIY ebike part 2
Author Last Post

I got started on my ebike kit on Tuesday. I removed the chain, pedals, front derailleur, crankset and bottom bracket. I will include a list of tools in part 3 of this series. I clipped the front derailleur cable, cleaned the BB and installed the battery, display, motor, and speed sensor. I was hampered by a plastic cable guide below my BB. I used part of a zip tie to take the place of the cable guide.

Unfortunately, the instructions did not include how to setup the display. I spent a lot of time online trying to figure out the display and how to connect all the cables. The box next to the front wheel in the picture includes all the spare parts from the build so far.

I was in the act of reinstalling the pedals today when I had trouble. The pedals did not seem to thread into the new crankarms included with the kit. I was watching a YouTube video at the time, and all should have been well. I could have cross threaded the pedals, so I ordered a R&L set of pedal taps online. Given my past history it seemed like $20 well spent.

So, when I get the pedals sorted, I can install the new chain, configure the display and go for a ride.

Sorry Barry, I will be riding your bike until I get this sorted.

Here are some things that could trip you up if you installed this kit. I had a square taper BB on my bike, so my old tool kit had the correct BB tool. Any cycling standard implemented since the early 2000's could be a problem for your install. The instructions suck, but the videos provided by the company were ok. I also found a manual online that helped.

I have been called a ham-handed mechanic. If you are competent home mechanic, you should be ok. The person who sold me the kit does troubleshooting calls via Zoom if you get in trouble.

Cheers

Mark
