Barrington Hills Moderate Training Ride – 75 miles – Sunday, June 20th – 8:00 AM
From the perspective of a ride leader, tomorrow’s weather forecast is the worst possible. The weather at the start time of the ride is expected to be reasonable for riding. By 1:00 PM (noon further west, which is the direction we’ll be riding) the weather is expected to become not only unpleasant, but potentially dangerous – thunderstorms, some of which may be severe. The chance of rain is 80%.
I’ve had enough experience with weather forecasts to know that there is at least a slight possibility that it will be entirely different by tomorrow morning. Assuming that it isn’t raining or that rain isn’t imminent at 8:00 AM, I plan to start the ride. We’ll monitor the weather closely. We could turn back at Northbrook, Long Grove, or Rand Road and still have a worthwhile ride. Once we pass Rand Road we’ll be a long ways from home and from reasonable shelter options for a while. We’ll proceed past Rand Road only if the weather forecast makes this seem a prudent option.
The gardener in me would like to see the rain. The cyclist wants to ride to Barrington Hills. Either way I’m guessing that my disappointment will be offset by my pleasure.
