Sunday Ride to Middlefork Savanna – August 11th – 9:00 AM – Panera

This Sunday I am leading a ride to one of my favorite places – the Middlefork Savanna, a rare remnant of Illinois’ pre-settlement environment. I have been leading rides to the Savanna for more than twenty years. I have entered from the north, east, south, but my latest route is my favorite. The new route, entering from the west, is only possible because of a new bridge connecting the Lake Forest Academy to the Savanna, a Lake County Forest Preserve. The view from the bridge is breathtaking, and as always, the ride through the savanna is very impressive.

We will ride at a moderate pace (13 to 15 mph) to the preserve. We'll ride a bit more than four miles on the limestone trail in the preserve at a slow pace with possible stops for nature gawking. The trail is suitable for road bikes (as long as you are not in a hurry). Lunch will be at the Panera in Lake Bluff. After lunch we will resume our moderate pace on the roads and paved paths back to Evanston. Our total distance will be around 45 miles.
